Dear All,
I am writing to announce that Elizabeth Self, PhD candidate at the University of Pittsburgh, was selected as the winner of the 2016 Chino Kaori Memorial Essay Prize for her paper titled, “A Mausoleum Fit for a Shogun’s Wife: the Two Seventeenth-Century Mausolea for Sugen-in.” Congratulations Elizabeth!
As with last year, 2016 saw many strong submissions and we thank all those who participated. I encourage everyone to consider submitting to next year’s competition, which will have a submission deadline around the same time as this year’s was.
We would also like to thank the four members of the Selection Committee for their hard work. This is the first year that there has been a Selection Committee that is separate from the JAHF Board. We’ve decided it’s best for members to remain anonymous until they step down, but thank them collectively for their contribution in the meantime.
You can read abstracts from this year and previous years on our website: https://jahf.net/chinokaori. The Chino Kaori Memorial Essay Prize was established by the Japan Art History Forum in 2003 in memory of distinguished colleague Chino Kaori, and is awarded annually to the best research paper written in English on a Japanese art history topic.
Many thanks again to all those who participated this year and congratulations to Elizabeth.
All best wishes,
Justin Jesty
JAHF Secretary
