This special exhibition focuses on the life and legacy of Hasegawa Tōhaku (1539-1610), founder of the Hasegawa school of painting and one of 16th-century Japan's leading artistic innovators. As the first ever exhibition in the U.S. dedicated to Tōhaku, A Giant Leap traces the artist's evolution from a provincial painter of Buddhist subjects to a master favored by shogun, samurai, and other cultural luminaries. Vibrantly painted screens and scrolls, including Important Cultural Properties, illustrate Tōhaku's dramatic transformation.
